Documenting Your Child's Journey at Simba Education

Indeed, watching a child grow in a trusted community makes our heart flutter. We're so happy to have you join our family and excited to share a glimpse into the heart of what makes learning thrive here.

At Simba Education, we are deeply committed to giving children the best possible start to their educational journey.

We believe in creating a true partnership between children, educators, families and our local community and learning happens collaboratively.

Our approach is inspired by philosophies and frameworks that celebrate the incredible potential within every child—the Reggio Emilia Philosophy, the Early Years Learning Framework, and the National Quality Standards.

These shape our curriculum and everyday practices to ensure a rich, holistic foundation for every child.

Seeing the Capable Child Through Documentation

At Simba Education, we hold a strong belief in the image of the child. We view each child as a capable, competent, and curious learner. Children are unique individuals full of potential, deeply connected to the world around them, and this belief shapes everything we do.

We create environments where children have access to real materials, opportunities for exploration, and practical experiences that spark creativity and discovery. But how do we see and understand their thinking? This is where documentation comes in.

Inspired by the Reggio Emilia Philosophy, documentation plays a vital role in making children's learning visible—not just to educators, but also to the children themselves and to you, their families.

Making Learning Visible

Think of your child while they're playing—they're experimenting, hypothesising, and problem-solving. They might be: building an intricate structure, mixing colours, debating an idea with a friend, or observing a tiny insect with focus—these rich learning moments are captured through documentation.

We use various methods such as:

  • Floor books
  • Displays on our walls
  • Visual images (photos)
  • Drawings by the children
  • Short videos

More than just cute snapshots—they're curated records of your child's thought process and development.

Why Documentation Matters

When we document, we're doing much more than recording experiences or projects. We are:

  • Acknowledging your child's ideas and ways of thinking — Children have incredible theories. Documentation helps us listen and see their unique perspectives.
  • Making learning concrete — Photos and drawings help children reflect on their growth, understand their journey, and see themselves as learners.
  • Supporting re-exploration — Children and educators can revisit and deepen previous learning, or take it in new directions.

Honouring the 100 Languages of Children

We embrace the concept of the 100 Languages of Children—the many ways children express and make sense of the world. This includes:

  • Drawing
  • Sculpting
  • Building
  • Movement
  • Singing
  • Storytelling

...and so much more.

Our play-based approach encourages all these languages—both verbal and non-verbal. Documentation helps us capture and honour each child's unique voice.

Examples include:

  • A photo of a child building reveals spatial reasoning and focus
  • A collaborative artwork shows teamwork and visual expression
  • Floor books with dictated stories showcase narrative understanding

Documentation as a Tool for Partnership

“It takes a village.”

We believe building authentic relationships with families is essential. Documentation creates a bridge between Simba and your home.

When you see photos or stories of your child's day:

  • You gain insight into their experiences and learning
  • You can have richer conversations at home
  • We can collaborate more effectively with you

Together, we build a holistic understanding of your child.

More Than Just Display Boards

At Simba Education, documentation is a cycle:

Observe → Reflect → Discuss → Plan

This process empowers our educators to:

  • Personalise your child's learning
  • Partner with you and the community
  • Celebrate each child's individuality, curiosity, and creativity

Our learning environments are designed to inspire wonder. Documentation shows us how the environment becomes a “third teacher”—revealing how children interact, discover, and learn.

In essence, documentation at Simba Education is our way of saying: We see you. We hear you. We value your thinking.

Your child's journey is important—and we want to celebrate it with you.

We invite you to explore our documentation displays and chat with our educators. They offer a beautiful window into the incredible world of learning unfolding every day at Simba Education.
